In general, if you follow the principals of the Mediterranean diet, your diet will contain many important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Typically, a good multivitamin contains all the vitamins and minerals recommended.
Multiple Vitamin Supplements that contain at least 400 IU of vitamin D are recommended. Recent studies suggest that deficiencies in Vitamin D are more common that previously realized. A simple blood test can check for this.
Omega 3 Supplements have a favorable effect on lipids, in general. Omega 3 reduces blood pressure and cardiovascular risk, and reduces the risk of premature dementia. The Mediterranean diet is rich is omega-3 fatty acids. Consider adding 1,000-1,500 mg of Omega 3 as a supplement to your diet. (equal parts DHA & EPA)
Whey Protein is an excellent source of high quality protein. Consider adding Whey protein isolate daily. (One to two scoops)
Cinnamon Powder or Capsules improve insulin sensitivity and may improve glucose control. Consider adding 1 gram/day.
Aspirin. The American Heart Association recommends taking aspirin for patients who have had a heart attack, unstable angina, or ischemic stroke, or a transient ischemic attack, (“little stroke”), as long as aspirin is not contraindicated for the individual patient. Before beginning any aspirin therapy, the American Heart Association recommends that you first consult your physician since the risk and benefits of aspirin therapy vary by individual. Aspirin in doses of 81 mg/ day, or every other day, for men 50 and older and women 65 or older, can reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke and may also provide other benefits.
Not all supplements reduce cardiovascular risk. Excess amounts of Vitamin A, Beta Carotene and Vitamin E in some cases may be detrimental to your heart health. Despite previous reports, folic acid supplementation has not been proven to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
